There was this piece we looked at in class called “This Is Water”, and I thought this piece was applicable to us as high schoolers even though the intended audience was college students.
Let me explain; the authors intent of the piece is for college students to think about the true boring reality of a 9-5 job, and the daily cycle of life that chips away at the mind of an adult.
College is a period of many experiences; your life shares the ever-changing experiences of academic learning and social events, and tasks such as shopping and driving probably don’t make you want to die.
What I want to say with this explanation is that college is lively; you go to class, you hang with friends, and you get a lot of time to yourself. As you chase the concept of having your dream future! ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶

This is where I think the piece is applicable to us high school students as well, since on top of chasing a dream job, we are chasing a dream college as well. I think during this period of our lives is when we experience double the delusion of what life will be like in the future.
Some people still enter college without even knowing what they are majoring in, I think it’s quite a delusional pursuit to be frank. Dedicating thousands of dollars and years of life to what? As much as we dream about the college experience, I would like us high schoolers to be realistic as well. Especially if you don’t know what you want to pursue in life.
I think a lot of high schoolers fall into the idea that you must attend the BEST UNIVERSITY EVER, but I’ve heard from a lot of my teachers that it doesn’t really matter. Maybe it’s just down to their career path, or maybe college names function in the same matter as luxury purses. Quality nonetheless, but all providing you the same type of product in the end.

Expanding the piece to not just the audience the author intended, but to expand it to your personal life is something that is still much needed. Your opinions on colleges are great and the comparison, "college names function in the same matter as luxury purses" is agreed with me. In the end, you will end up with the same piece of paper with the same power, but leaving with more money in debt.
ReplyDeleteYour transition words and phrases were awesome, the post felt super organized :D
ReplyDeleteHi Toro, I really enjoyed how you directly referenced the piece we discussed in class and spun it in a way that’s even more relatable, especially to your peers. Hearing someone directly say how without a clear goal, college might not be the immediate next goal is such a refreshing opinion considering the highly competitive environment our school surrounds us with. The ending as well is a really nice way of saying that even with lesser materials, it’s very possible to create a functional product.
