The Apathy for the Ant

Honey Citron Tea is a drink that I often make. Sourced from a sweet yellow jelly in a jar. It tastes sort of lemonade like, and harbors nutritional benefits over other sugary drinks (I hope). I can’t confirm if it’s healthy, but when I crunch on the left-over citrus skin… I feel like I’m doing something good for myself. Also, once you’re finished, you get a cute glass jar 9/10.

I remember seeing a video of a lady use a honey and borax solution to desecrate the Ant population in her home. I must admit myself that I too harbor a fear for “tiny terrors” (bugs and insects) but alas, am too lazy to make such weapons of mass destruction.

This calls into question however, the morality of the Ant murders (in similar vain to Spiders and Flys). The ignorance in destroying these tiny lives really brings into view the nature of mankind. Our potential to wreck ecosystems and disregard the life within them, only to become territorial out of our own fears.

I fear the Ant, the Spider, and the Fly, like a lot of individuals. But I sympathize with their desire to survive in a world taken from them. Though I will not defend the mosquito; those things can gladly suffer.

Many bugs and insects contribute to the environment in ways mankind could only dream of. Their ability to “do no harm” to their ecosystems is miles ahead of all the wasteful ways mankind has marked this Earth. If we take that into consideration, our role as an invasive species… are these “tiny terrors” not more valuable to the health of the world?

As much as I fear the Ant, I just as much fear all of them that I have murdered. Their tiny lives a nuisance to mine, but truly triumphant to the world taken from them. In many extraordinary ways, I fear the Ant. But in many more, I feel for him.

  1. Toro, what a clever blog post! I laughed a couple of times, I too do not sympathize with mosquitoes. I love how you tied in the food portion of your blog so cleverly with your point! Great job -Andrea L

  2. Great post! I love how you applied the question of morality we read about in the Death of a Moth to other common scenarios - such as ant extraction. I have also waged many wars against ants, and I never thought of the moral component until reading your blog post. I also like how you capitalized the Ant, Spider, and Fly. It seems to make them into more than just insects; it signals a significance we previously did not give them.

  3. The world we have created is the world that has been taken away from them, and the fact that we punish them with death for trying to survive in the same world they no longer recognize is truly unfortunate. I also feel for them, but some have found ways to coexist and take advantage.

  4. This blog post reminds people to have empathy! Whenever I see a bug I usually just kill it, but i've never really thought of their amazing contributions to the environment. They honestly help it more than we as humans do.
